Did you ever wonder who played that memorable piece while John Travolta and Uma Thurman danced in Pulp Fiction? Wonder no more … here’s the Gitano family doing what they do best.

Susheela Raman is one of my favorite artists. She has a unique way of blending the traditional and the modern. The first part of this song is an ancient Tamil chant. Then she mixes it with a Jimi Hendix’s Voodoo Child. Who can pull that off, and with much aplomb at that?

I heart YouTube! See this vid of Joni Mitchell in 1965 at the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada. Was she a student there (as the intro says)?

What I would do to watch them live! When are they coming this side of the globe?

I don’t wanna wait in vain for your love;
I don’t wanna wait in vain for your love.
From the very first time I rest my eyes on you, girl,
My heart says follow through.
But I know, now, that I’m way down on your line,
But the waitin’ feel is fine:
So don’t treat me like a puppet on a string,
cause I know I have to do my thing.
Dont talk to me as if you think Im dumb;
I wanna know when youre gonna come – soon.
I don’t wanna wait in vain for your love;
I don’t wanna wait in vain for your love;
I don’t wanna wait in vain for your love,
’cause if summer is here,
I’m still waiting there;
Winter is here,
And I’m still waiting there.

/guitar solo/

Like I said:
It’s been three years since I’m knockin’ on your door,
And I still can knock some more:
Ooh girl, ooh girl, is it feasible?
I wanna know now, for I to knock some more.
Ya see, in life I know there’s lots of grief,
But your love is my relief:
Tears in my eyes burn – tears in my eyes burn
While I’m waiting – while I’m waiting for my turn,
See!

I don’twanna wait in vain for your love;
I don’t wanna wait in vain for your love;
I don’t wanna wait in vain for your love;
I don’t wanna wait in vain for your love;
I don’t wanna wait in vain for your love, oh!
I don’t wanna – I don’t wanna – I don’t wanna – I don’tt wanna -
I don’t wanna wait in vain.
I dont wanna – I dont wanna – I dont wanna – I dont wanna -
I dont wanna wait in vain.
No, I dont wanna (I dont wanna – I dont wanna – I dont wanna -
I dont wanna – I dont wanna wait in vain) -
No I – no I (I dont wanna – I dont wanna – I dont wanna – I dont
Wanna – I dont wanna wait in vain) -
No, no-no, i, no, I (I dont wanna – I dont wanna – I dont wanna -
I dont wanna – I dont wanna wait in vain) -
Its your love that Im waiting on (I dont wanna – I dont wanna -
I dont wanna – I dont wanna – I dont wanna wait in vain);
Its me love that youre running from.
Its jah love that Im waiting on (I dont wanna – I dont wanna -
I dont wanna – I dont wanna – I dont wanna wait in vain);
Its me love that youre running from.

Language: Portuguese (?)
My take: This was an early favorite of mine because it's catchy and repetitive … but definitely not boring! Its interesting beat reminds me of a horse galloping in an open field. The lyrics are really easy to follow to that I remember singing to it just after first listening. But it's not meant to be a "fun" song despite being so upbeat, because it laments of heartache and hearbreak. Irony of ironies.

Lyrics:

Molino Molero
Molino solo ta andando
Ta andando
Ta andando

Ah est el molino
Moliendo en la playa
Moliendo mi pena
Moliendo en la playa
Ta andado

Molino molero
Molino solo ta andando
Molino molero
Molino solo ta andando
Ta andando

Ah est el molino
Moliendo mi pena
Moliendo mi pena

English:
The mill, crushing mill
Mill alone grinding
Ta andando
Ta andando
Ta andando

Here is the mill
Milling on the shore
Grinding my pain
Milling on the shore
Ta andando

Luaka Bop is another label of world music artists (Susana Baca is in their little line-up). By their name alone, I like them already!

If you've tried Calabash and found that as a a great resource, here's another one … for easy samplings of world music. Take your pick of Latin, African, DJ Afro mix, Brazilian and the Luaka mix.

It's a flash-run thingy, so no need to download anything (you DO have Flash, right?) Just click on "Toybox" graphic and enjoy! I had a hard time tearing myself away. After that, don't forget to wander around to read up and listen to more great artists …

Language: Tyagaraja (Sanskrit?)
From my CD: Love Trap
My take: I am unabashedly a Susheela Raman fan. When I first heard her, there was that something about her earthy voice and the unmistakeable Indian sound she brings into her songs.

This particular song has got to be among my top favorites in the album. First time I heard it, it kind of scared me because even without knowing what it was about, it starts off deep, dark and soulful and somehow a metamophosis … you get caught up in an dervish. Hey, is this actually rock and roll? How did it end up becoming something you could headbang to? And then the realization that you are actually getting the groove in over an ages-old traditional Indian chant (look at the lyrics below)!

Read another unabashed fan’s review of her entire album.

English translation of lyrics:
Emerald one
Refuge to seeker
Know my innermost yearning
Darling of the solar dynasty
Your heart overflows with bliss
There is none but you
In the past you protected me
But what now
If you refuse to take my hand
When I need you most?

Manasuloni (Tyagaraja) Traditional, arranged by Susheela Raman, Sam Mills, Djanuno Dabo
